Deborah - CQJP Block One is semi-finished.

Block One - Emma
I'm sure I'm not completely done but I'm giving it a rest. There are things I would have done differently -- the top right hand corner needs something more, I think -- But, overall, I'm okay with this.

Deborah, I really like this block! I love the embroidered piece in the center along with the two black and white photos. It has such a warm, comfortable feel to it. Very nice fabric choices too. Is that Emma in both photos?

Yes, that is my Aunt Emma- the oldest of my mother's siblings. She was just married in the photo on the left; in her 70's on the right. I'm glad you like the block.

Thank you!

A very pretty block, great tribute for Emma. In that corner, maybe just a couple of curved lines or a vine? I very much like this first block.

Such a strong start, Deborah. Just keep moving forward with your ideas.

This block feels very homey, and I think the fabric choices reflect the time period nicely. It's soft and very nice.

Well done Deborah, this is a well-balanced block in colours that I really like. And I also like the pink threads added to that lace around the picture on the right. A nice addition.

Yes, maybe it does need a 'little' something extra in that top right corner... how about cupids arrow going through the heart, lol.

This turned out so pretty. My fav would have to be the way you framed the photos. Great combos of stitching and texture worked all through. I know you had achy fingertips... hope they're better

Nice, I love the way you've used the flowers!

Good ideas. I'm letting it sit for awhile to get a fresh perspective. But, there are a few areas that need something; I'm definitely not completely satisfied.

I'm so glad to hear that. I was trying to find fabrics that fit. It is a very personal piece. Thanks!

Thanks, Jane. It was a challenge pushing that needle through the layers. What I would up doing was tacking the 2nd photo down, then adding the lace with the buttonhole stitch. As I was threading the embroidery thread through the lace, I tacked it down to the block which secured it a little more.

Thanks; I was worried it was too much.

Cy, that's a thought!

Learning something every day. I'll be anxious to see what this block looks like in November!

I agree, the flowers are wonderful! They strike me as a unifying theme throughout the block: rather than being "too much", they seem to me to pull everything together in a wonderful way.
The heart in the upper right corner currently seems a little bit isolated as a motif. I think that maybe adding some little flowers next to it might help bring it into harmony with the rest of the block?
